John will talk about the disease cycle on potato and tomato plants, and the influence of climate on disease outbreaks. He explains that breeding for resistance is perhaps the best approach to environmentally friendly disease control and there have been advances in the use of genetic engineering to speed up the development of new varieties. However, there are other approaches to control including the timely application of fungicides.
He is interested in the different approaches that gardeners adopt to reduce the impact of blight.
